too close to broken too far from help be silent as you awaken they'll hear you if you yelp
The ashen shaded femmor was beginning to feel somewhat lethargic from being in the heat of the sun. Soon she stumbled upon this forest. All colors were that of a mid-autumn. Dead leaves crunched under her sod-worn flints as she moved onward. She never remembered the season being this deep into autumn earlier in the week. Actually, winter had only just ended. "Strange...", the young mare mumbled to herself. "How long have I been traveling...? Have I lost sense of time...?" A cool wind blew suddenly, causing the mare's rag-like mane to thrash behind her nape like a torn flag.
She wasn't going to lie to herself, the cool wind felt pretty good after walking with the sun beating down on her back for hours. All she remembered from the past few days was that she was walking in a field that never seemed to end and then there was a period of time where she was in a very thick fog.. then there was just a field again. She had no idea how long she had been traveling but seeing the autumn colors scared her quite a bit. Where was she, really? Stanza had an inkling that this wasn't any ordinary forest and that she was most likely farther away from other horses as she wanted to get.
The arabic-looking mare's soft eyes scanned the area intensely for any sign of life other than herself. She let a light sigh escape her when she realized she was the only one around for the moment. Soon she came upon a small clearing. The grass was green and quite soft in some places and in other areas the ground was covered in dead grasses as if a path was made at some point in the past. The young arabic mare halted for a moment, looking blankly at her peaceful surroundings.
Seeing a comfortable-looking patch of grass, the mare moved almost silently to it and let her weary back legs descend to the ground. Stanza sighed rather loudly, as if out of annoyance, feeling the rays of the sun fall upon her dry fur before letting her front legs fold under her. She took one quick look at the perfect blue sky before resting her heavy head upon the soft green grass.
Today seemed like it was longer than just one day, the mare thought to herself. It seemed like a lot longer than that... The young mare yawned for what seemed to be like minutes and tried to close her eyes to get some sleep even though she knew her bad memories would find her in her dreams. Her thoughts drifted and she started asking herself questions like 'where am i?' and 'why is it autumn already?' as she tried to get her restless mind off the past... if only for a few minutes.
The poem above describes part of Stanza's escape from her former herd that occurred at night. it has nothing to do with this post but I like it. ^^ Poem © Befera 2007
